Binge Watching

I like to watch tv while I knit, or sew or bake and Netflix is how I watch. I discover new (to me anyway) gems. I also discover shows that I think I might like to show my kids, or ones that Anthony and I watched all the time.

Things I am watching or waiting for the next seasons with baited breath or just happily re-watching:

1. The Bletchley Circle. This is a new one for me. I really hope there are more seasons or I will be bitterly disappointed.

2. Call the Midwife. I finished both seasons a few times and I am desperately waiting for the third season.

3. Pretty Little Liars. This is one of my guilty pleasures. Again I am waiting for the next season.

4. The Vampire Diaries. This is another guilty pleasure, but I am going through this one more slowly.

5. The West Wing. This is one that Anthony and I are enjoying a second time around. I always worry about how some things age and this is a keeper.

6. Gilmore Girls. I was always a fan of this show and while it is sometimes trite and I want to get rid of some of the horrible stereotypes, I can watch this around my kids and not worry too much.

7. Covert Affairs. This is one I missed when it was on tv, but it is quirky and reminds me of Alias.

8. Veronica Mars. I loved this one and I really enjoyed re-watching it all.

9. Doctor Who. I am in the midst of re-watching all of the new Doctor Who episodes. I still think David Tennant is my favourite Doctor. I am still torn between Rose, Donna and Amy for favourite companion.

10. Buffy, Angel and Firefly. My Dvds may be worn out so having these as back up is a good idea.

Anything else I should be watching that isn’t Mad Men?

Menu Plan Monday, well Saturday: Back in the Saddle Again

One thing I loved about blogging, when I did it regularly, was participating in Menu Plan Monday. It was something to help me plan the week’s meals and the grocery list. I made far less impromptu decisions about dinners and when I was on the ball I spent less on groceries. So, back to blogging, back in the saddle again for menu planning.

Sunday (9 Nov): Roast Chicken and veggies. Rice for the boys.

Monday (10 Nov): Lasagna and salad and bread. I will make a few and freeze them for other dinners.

Tuesday (11 Nov): Oven baked chicken strips and oven fries. Raw veggies and dip sauce.

Wednesday (12 Nov): Spaghetti and salad and bread.

Thursday (13 Nov): Meatloaf (stuffed with shredded veggies) ,cous cous,  rice for the boys, and corn.

Friday: Pizza and a movie.

Saturday: Maple Baked salmon, basmati rice and salad.

If anyone has a good way of making the cous cous more palatable for the boys please let me know.

Remembrance Day at Elementary School

One thing that always gets me about elementary schools in Canada is their links to the past and especially to Remembrance Day. While I don’t really like the references to war and to the death the wars represent, I think we need to honour our past and what life might have been like without those soldiers and sailors who risked their lives for our freedom.

I have taken the boys to the Remembrance day ceremonies since they were very little and it seems to hit Aidan especially hard. He is such an empathetic soul and really feels the solemnity of the occasion. Last year he made a beautiful fabric art piece for his uncle Jimmy. This year he has written two poems, one in English and the other in French. He would like to have been part of the Remembrance Day ceremony at school, but he wasn’t chosen this year. Maybe next year.

I promised Aidan that I would put his poems on the blog. If you have any comments I will let him know.

Aidan’s Remembrance Day Poems

Aidan laying a poppy on a wreath

Lest We Forget

Lest we forget,

those soldiers who met,

ends of respect,

who died to protect,

they went down the highway of heroes,

and god do protect their lost souls,

thanks for our freedom,

lest we forget.

Le jour de souvenir

N’oublions pas,

tous ses soldats,

q’ui sont donné ses vie pour s’auver des gens ils savais meme pas,

mais ses esperits reste encore dans l’air,

la mer et la terre,

merci.
