Truth: Hopes and Dreams

I decided that in my post on forgiveness I covered both days 3 and 4, both by forgiving myself for not keeping in touch with people and forgiving those who didn’t keep in touch with me.  Now onto day 5, something I hope to do in my life.

I hope to do a great many things in my life some great, some frivolous and some career oriented and some just a dream that will not likely happen for a very great while.

In the frivolous category I would like at some point to go to a ball with Anthony.  I would love to dress up, have dinner and dance with my husband and not worry about the kids.  Of course in a ball situation it would be nice to have some other couples who would also be there so it could be a real party.  Maybe one year Anthony and I will go to one of the New Year’s Eve balls here.

In the career category I would like to become a paid writer.  I know that this is somewhat attainable as long as I keep up with my writing on the blog and start to send out writing proposals.  I would also like to write a children’s book or two.  I haven’t figured out if they will be picture book stories or short novels for the 4-7 set.  There are not a lot of short novels that are suitable for early readers. My hope is to more fully pursue this when Quinlan is in preschool next year.

I also hope to travel more with the kids.  I am planning to go to Europe in 2012, however I think it has to be not London since it will be frantic due to the summer games.  Anthony and I want to go to Scotland, Ireland, Wales and France for starters.  I am keeping the blogher account open so that we can sock away some cash to pay for the vacation.

I hope for is a chance to buy a house that isn’t too far from Anthony’s work.  Unless the bottom falls out of the housing market in Vancouver this is not going to happen.  There is no way we can afford even a 3 bedroom townhouse right now, and unless we win a lottery I think this is still just a dream. In the meantime we are looking for a 3 bedroom house that isn’t unaffordable to rent.  This *may* be a more attainable goal.

I hope that both Aidan and Quinlan will get through university without debt.  I hope they find their bliss. I want my boys to be happy and healthy and fulfiled.

Family Movie Night

In our quest to find movies that don’t make Aidan run screaming “I don’t want to see this movie. It scares me,”  we have tried a number of different family films over the last few weeks.  Usually if we can keep a hold of him and reassure him, Aidan will make it to he end of the movies. Sometimes he loves them and sometimes he, well, he doesn’t.

So far some thumbs up movies:

Toy Story 3 (He did have to be reassured a few times, especially at the dump.)

How to Train Your Dragon (Oddly enough he really liked this movie, and had to be reassured a lot less than usual.)

Mary Poppins (He had no trouble with this one at all. I wasn’t sure what his reaction would be.)

The Sound of Music (We haven’t watched the whole thing, but so far so good.)

The thumbs down:

Finding Nemo (He spent some time under the dining room table for this one.)

I am to the point where I think I really need to get him to watch as many kid movies as I can to desensitise him a bit. I mean if he can have a problem with Cars, a movie he has watch a dozen times, we really need to find a way to help him manage his anxiety with minor conflict.

What are your kids favourite movies? Or, what are your favourite kid movies?

Recipe: Potato Scones

Light and fluffy Potato Scones

Light and fluffy Potato Scones

As a child (and teenager) I was always happy when we had leftover mashed potatoes because it meant that in the morning, or for brunch the next day we would have potato scones.  Warm from the oven with melted butter these scones are to die for, light and fluffy and not dry at all.

Last night I made too many mashed potatoes on purpose. This morning Quinlan helped me measure, dump and mix the dry ingredients. Aidan wanted to help as well, but I put him off until this afternoon when we will try to make some totally homemade pumpkin pie.

Ingredients:

2 Cups Flour

1/4 Cup butter or Margarine

3 TBSP Baking Powder

1 TBSP Sugar

1TSP Nutmeg

1/2 TSP Salt

~1 Cup Mashed Potato

1/2 Cup Milk

Directions:

Preheat Oven to 400F.

Mix all the dry ingredients and add in the butter.  Once the butter is cut in mix in the potatoes and milk.  When it all sticks together dump on to a lightly floured surface.  Use a juice glass or round cookie cutter to cut out scones and put on a parchment covered cookie sheet. The scones should be about a half inch thick.

Light Browning

Light Browning

Bake for about 10 minutes until the bottoms are a light brown and the tops are just starting to brown.

Try not to butter and eat all of them right out of the oven.
