Menu Plan Monday

This week was a mess, and as Sir Topham Hatt (the Fat Controller!) would say: “Gwen, you have caused confusion and delay!” Oh, the Gods, I’m going to burn in Kitchen Hell. 🙂 Well, it wasn’t that bad, but a number of meals were changed to different days and I changed my mind about the turkey meatloaf. Wow, ground turkey is expensive! This week I will try to get back on track and have geocaching weekend of meals planned. Slow cooker days, or picnics. 🙂

Monday: Roast chicken, roast potatoes + vegetable. Pasta and veggies for the boy.

Tuesday: Pizza. Sandwich meat, pasta, and cucumber for the boy.

Wednesday: Slow cooker pot roast.

Thursday: BBQ chicken, oven fries, salad.

Friday: Beef-fried rice.

Saturday: Flexible meal (slow cooked or picnic)

Sunday: Happy Mother’s Day to all moms and moms-to-be. Supper up to Anthony.

Harry Potter: I just figured him out.

Ok, so maybe I am the biggest dunce but I finally figured it out. Harry Potter is himself a horcrux. How did I not figure this out earlier? If Voldemort used objects and acts of great evil to divide his soul and there are 6 or 7 of them, Harry has to be one of them. What better way for Harry to be the downfall of Voldemort? Since Harry has to destroy all the Horcruxes in order to defeat Voldemort for good, and Rowling needs to end the series for good, Harry has to die, but he also has to win. We wouldn’t stand for it otherwise. 🙂

I have been preparing myself for the upcoming release of the last Harry Potter book: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. To this end I am listening to all the books again. I just finished HP and the Chamber of Secrets again last night. (As an aside, I love Stephen Fry. He is one of the best narrators I have ever heard. It is a little funny, I am sure that Jim dale is also a good narrator, but after hearing the first 5 books read by Stephen Fry I couldn’t bear to listen to the 6th book as read by Jim Dale.) In the last chapter when Dumbledore is talking to Harry alone and Harry finally asks about why he and Voldemort share commonalities, the truth comes out.

“ ‘You can speak Parseltongue, Harry,’ said Dumbledore calmly, ‘because Lord Voldemort – who is the last remaining ancestor of Salazar Slytherin – can speak Parseltongue. Unless I’m much mistaken, he transfered some of his own powers to you the night he gave you that scar. Not something he intended to do, I’m sure . . .’

‘Voldemort put a bit of himself in me?’ Harry said Thunderstruck.

‘It certainly seems so.’ “

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets pg 245

Anyway, as I was listening to this last night it suddenly occurred to me that Harry is the last Horcrux. However, I am not certain enough of this to post it to the Leaky Cauldron’s Horcrux Thread. If you are interested in the books and have a theory about the last Horcrux you should take a peek. There is also a lot of neat stuff on the Leaky Cauldron site. Have fun, and don’t make too much fun of me if you think I am dead wrong on this one. I guess we only have about 80 days to find out.

Menu Plan Monday

menu_plan_monday.bmp

Another week, another happy husband. Of course this may be because we spent most of the weekend outdoors. It was another beautiful weekend with lots of sun, big trucks and geocaching. The sun will be out for at least part of the week and the temperature is rising so BBQ will be the appliance of choice this week. We tried Anthony’s Sweet and Sour Meatball recipe in the slow-cooker on Sunday and we need to tweak the sauce recipe a bit. It was very liquidy. In the oven we end up adding water so that the sauce doesn’t reduce too much, but there isn’t the reduction in the slow-cooker. If anyone can give me some tips for thickening up the sauce without loosing taste or putting it in the oven please let me know in the comments.

So without further ado, the menu.

Monday: BBQ chicken, with mashed potatoes, salad

Tuesday: Guide Night=late dinner so convenient food.

Wednesday: Ground Turkey Meatloaf (From the April issue of Weight Watcher’s Magazine)

Thursday: Beef kabobs (with yellow peppers, mushrooms, pearl onions) done on the BBQ with Basmati rice

Friday: Casual BBQ Hamburgers and Hot Dogs, Salad

Saturday: BBQ Fish (Saturday morning trip to Granville Island market to pick up fish and vegetables and bread.) Grilled Vegetables, Nugget Potatoes.

Sunday: Roast Beast (beef or chicken, haven’t decided yet.) Roast potatoes, carrots, and Cesar salad.

Recipe for Turkey Meatloaf:

Prep. 20 min. Cook 1 hour Pre-Heat oven to 375 deg F

2 Garlic Cloves minced * 1 onion diced *

1 teaspoon olive oil 1 (1/2 pound) zucchini finely chopped. *

1 teaspoon dried thyme 1.5 pounds ground turkey

3/4 cup quick cooking oats 1/3 cup plain fat free yoghurt

2 large eggs lightly beaten 1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon fresh ground pepper 1/4 cup + tablespoons Ketchup

* you can chop things finely with a food processor if you have one.

1. Pre-heat oven. Chop ingredients.

2. Heat the oil in a large non-stick skillet over med-low heat. Add onions and garlic and cook until softened, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes. Add the zucchini and thyme to the skillet; increase the heat and cook, stirring occasionally until the liquid has evaporated and the vegetables are softened, about 4 minutes. Transfer to a large bowl and let cool, about 5 minutes.

3. Add the turkey, oats, yoghurt, eggs, salt, pepper, and 2 tablespoons of ketchup to the vegetables, mix until just blended. Spoon into the center of a 9 x 13 inch baking pan; form into a 5 x 9 loaf. Bake 35 minutes. Spread remaining 1/4 cup ketchup over the loaf. bake until a meat thermometer inserted to the center of the loaf reads 165 deg. F, about 15 minutes longer. Let stand 10 minutes. Transfer to a cutting board and cut into 6 slices.

Per Serving: (1 slice) 232 cal, 4 g fat, 2 g fibre Points Value: 5

The Shower Incident

We had a very long and exciting day of outdoor fun today that I will recount later. I first need to tell you about what happened getting Aidan ready for bed. I will just let you know that there will be talk about poop, so, if you are squeamish about such things read this post no further. The next post will be squeaky clean I promise. 🙂

The plan, after the long day and unexpected sojourn to Wendy’s for supper, was to get Aidan a shower, a clean pair of Pajamas, a bottle of milk and bed. (Let me back up here a bit and let me know if other couples have this problem on the weekends too. Because we are both changing Aidan’s diapers, we never know if he has had his usual bowel movements for the day. It is not unusual to hear either Anthony or I ask if we changed one during the day. We didn’t today until this afternoon before we went out again and it was one of those very solid round lumps that stink to high heaven but don’t do a whole lot to relieve the digestive track. I think you see where my story is going.) We got home about quarter after seven and Anthony took Aidan straight to the shower and I went to get the bottle, pj’s, diaper and acetaminophen. I just got downstairs with the milk, got his pj’s and diaper together when I heard “Oh Crap Gwen! Help!” I asked what was wrong, “Did he poop in the bathtub?” Well of course the answer was yes and we tried to figure out what to do. I got Anthony to hold Aidan still and got some wipes, and then we put him on his toilet seat insert on the toilet. It was a good thing because apparently he wasn’t finished. So we cheered the first poop in the toilet, while trying not to gag as we cleaned up the bathtub. 🙂 I tell you, it is a fine line between pride and gagging. Toddlers, gotta love ’em.
