Guilty and Sleep Deprived . . . Again

I sometimes wonder if I have offended the sleep gods/goddesses somehow.  I love both my children but the night wakings and early morning wakings are starting to really take their toll.

I envy my husband his ability to go back to sleep in an instant, but I think if we actually had the room he would be sleeping in a different room until the sleep train comes back into our house.  Then I might not feel so guilty about having  him take the boys from about 5:30 am until he leaves for work.  The last couple of nights/days there was no way I was going to be able to cope with the day if I didn’t get that small window of sleep time from 6 to 8.

Last night was a horrible night.  I am not sure why, but Quinlan had a bad night and to make matters worse, when I finally got to sleep after the 1:30 ish wake up, I woke with sinus problems folled by a horrific case of insomnia.  There is nothing like not being able to get to sleep when you know at least one of your children will be waking soon.  I figure I got about around 3 and a half hours sleep all told last night.  Let me just say it is not enough.

At least I know I am not the only one who is the walking dead lately.

Past Into the Future

December has been so busy that I didn’t post as often as I wanted to.  By the time I got to a point where I could post it was so late in the evening that I chose sleep over posting.  This is not to say that I don’t have a written record of what happened in December 2009.  I made sure to document what we did during December.  Every day I would write a letter to Aidan and Quinlan looking to what we were going to do for the next day and than in the same envelope I would put a journal entry of what we actually did for the day.  I have pictures from almost every day and except for a few pages that I need to finish, I have a pair of books documenting Advent. (I still need to write about Christmas day and Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve.)  Having posted every day in November and scrap-booked and journaled December I am feeling quite optimistic about what I can accomplish writing wise in 2010.

I am not one to make New Year’s Resolutions.  I find that too often the goals I set for a year are not the right goals and lead to disappointment.  This year my goals are simple and few:

I want to be more patient with myself, my family.  I think that part of the way I will accomplish this is to find a better balance.  I am working very hard to become more organized and I hope the purging of things will help.  If I can get rid of some of the clutter and organize the books, papers and toys, I think I will come away much less stressed.

I am still working toward becoming a better (and more lucrative) writer.  I still think this is an attainable goal.  I keep looking at writing jobs and I have a small one starting this month.  I will also try to get some of the stories that are running around in my head out onto paper into the computer [who was I kidding . . . paper?] I really want to have something to send to Steve so he can illustrate and work some of his book designing magic.  I will also make more of an effort to post at least 3 times a week.  I am sure I can do it, and I hope it will be more like 5 times a weeks, but I do not want to set myself up to fail in anyway.

I will help us get out more on the weekends caching and hiking and snowshoeing.  This means realistically that I need to get more of the cleaning and other errands finished during the week.  As horrible as it is to grocery shop with Quinlan, it will be worth it if we can get outside more.

I want to make more time for Anthony and me.  This means we have to hire a babysitter at least once a month and actually get out to go to a play or a movie or something.  We need to have some time to talk without a small voice interrupting us all the time.

I want to learn to take better pictures.  We have a nice camera (the rebel) and we need to be using it more.  I need to get over the worry that I will break it.  If it breaks while taking pictures of the boys and the beauty that is Vancouver, so be it.  At least it will do so being used.

What are your reasonable goals for the year?  Anything else I should be working on for the new decade?
