On the Writing Process

When I set out to do NaBloPoMo this year, I really wanted to get back into the habit of writing everyday.  For the most part it has actually been pretty easy but there are some days when finding the words is difficult.  I have tons of ideas but by the time I get to sit down to write them I am unfocused and tired.  I supposed it is better than running around after Quinlan who has managed to scale everything in the living room and dinning room.

I  have a few drafts that will eventually be something, and I am hand writing my blog to inspire post about breastfeeding because sometimes I find that the words come easier when using a pen and paper. I even got a few new pens.  I love the feel of a new pen on nice paper.  It inspires me to be a pretty writer, even if not everything is spelled correctly.

Are there some things that you find easier to write with pen and paper?

Dancing With the Stars: Why Do We Care?

On Monday and Tuesday nights, Anthony and I share a bit of a secret life.  We are closet Dancing With The Stars fans. In fact up until this last season, I even voted for people.  In the beginning we watched because we had an idea of who the people were, and we like the way Tom Bergeron handled the crowds, stars and judges.  Now I am not sure why we watch since it became Dancing With the Mildly Famous But At Least Not a Hilton but it is still fun.

This season I wasn’t really sure if we would be rooting for anyone, I mean come on, Kelly Osbourne and some people we have never heard of?  I mean other than Donny Osmond who knew anyone on the show this season?  Yet here we are in the semi-final week and we are still watching and trying to figure out who actually makes it into the final.  In fact as I am writing this I am watching the results show and I was right, Joanna was eliminated.  I thought that Donny might go, but he has a ton of fan support, some of whom may actually know how to use a computer.

So are we the only closet Dancing With The Stars fans? What are your guilty pleasures in tv?

It’s a Little Bit Punny, This Feeling Inside . . .

Sometimes when I am working on a post I give it a title that is just a quick description before I give it the final title.  I sometimes really like a title but it is so totally inappropriate for the post that I need to scrap it.  Sometimes I can’t think of anything appropriate so I make up a joke title.  This has prompted this post. Here are some of is my discarded titles, and some that I would like to have had the guts to post and some that I think would make great titles if I could find the post to go with them.

First up is a title for a breastfeeding post I am writing for the blog to inspire contest.  I am writing about some of the breastfeeding difficulties and triumphs with both Quinlan and Aidan.  I am writing it so that people can understand that despite how difficult breastfeeding can be while both the baby and mother are learning it can be so fulfilling.  I didn’t think however, that even though it is a great title, this title invoked the feeling of the post.

The Breast is Yet to Come: Or How Quinlan Became a Boob Man

If I was writing a satirical look at the breastfeeding journey this might be the title.

Most of my other discarded titles are song titles or tasteless puns. For the life of me I can’t find my other titles, so this post will need to end here for now, though I think it may be one I will revisit soon.  What are your favourite titles?

Musings on God and Community

Today I went to church for the first time in ages.  I have been getting ready for Advent with the choir, but somehow I haven’t been able to get my body out of the house on time for a very long time.  This is even worse when you figure that my service starts at either 10:30 am or 11:30 am.

The lovely thing about making it to church this morning is mostly about the sense of community that I have in this church.  These people are part of my community in Vancouver.  They greet me with hugs and smiles  and cheers of welcome back.  How are things going with you?  They don’t make me feel bad for not being there much over the last year, but welcomed back into the fold.  It makes me want to be there more.

Community.  This is what church is for a lot of people.  God working through people to create a sense of communion.  These are people who would not be friends, or acquaintances if it weren’t for this communion.  These are people that generally wouldn’t meet in the other parts of their lives.  Like blogs and twitter now, church was, and still is to some extent, how people of all ages, different backgrounds, lifestyles and financial situations and education come together.

No matter what the religion, be it Islam, Judaism, Christianity or whatever, the sense of community is the biggest gift it affords.  Well at least in my humble opinion.

I don’t know anyone of any religion who doesn’t have at least some difference of opinion with the doctrine.    Sometimes these are large enough that it stops you from becoming part  of a religious community.  Sometimes if you can put the politics out of the way then it can become a place of comfort.

I believe in God, and I am certain that God isn’t nearly as judgemental as the people who purport to know what he is thinking.  I don’t think that a God who hates people who love each other is a God for me.  So maybe I am just as deluded as the next person, but my God is one of mercy and well, if he made all people, he made them the way they are.  ALL people.  ALL sexual orientations.  ALL.
