Quinlan and Aidan

I have two pictures on my mantle of Quinlan and Aidan, they were taken on the first day of preschool last year. Both boys are happy, laughing and looking at each other. I look at these two pictures and I marvel at how much they have changed in the last year and a half.

Aidan and Quinlan, September 2009

Aidan is in the second half of kindergarten and learning french at an astounding rate. He is taller and has glasses. He is reading so much more and since he got his glasses he is drawing and colouring  and making art.

Quinlan is finally off the breast. He still wants his soother, but we are weaning him off that as well. Quinlan’s face looks so much older, and he is running and jumping like a boy much older. Quinlan still has some speech issues, but he is getting so much more talkative and much more understandable.

Both boys are playing together more and this is both wonderful and horrible at the same time. Quinlan is very protective of what he wants and how he wants to do things. Aidan is very protective of what he wants and how he wants to do things. Quinlan always wants what Aidan is playing with. Aidan always wants what Quinlan is playing with. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn’t.

Both my boys are incredibly stubborn and bullheaded. They get ideas and it is difficult if near impossible to change their minds. While this has not changed over the year and a half, it is still a source of some frustration for all.

In the last year Aidan has started to learn how to swim, ski, skate and act.  In the last few weeks he learned to ride his bike! He can read small novels and is getting into Harry Potter. He can read cursive and I plan to teach him how write in cursive very soon.

In the last year Quinlan has learned to run, jump dance, and is learning to swim. He quite happily goes underwater and has fun at the pool. His first time on skates was a blast and he will love skating lessons next year. It is almost time to register him for preschool next year. Now we just need to get him potty trained.

My boys are growing up, and it still amazes me everyday the things they can do. I love to watch them grow and change, but a little part of me can’t help wishing I could stop time, if only for a little while. Well, except for the potty training, that can happen any time now.

Spice Cake

Spice Cake

It seems my spice cake was well received at Saturday’s #Sweetspot11 party and I’ve had a few requests for the recipe. Here it is! Please bear with me, it’s been passed down to me via my mother, and she was pretty terse with the details.

Spice Cake
In a large bowl:

Cream:
2/3 cup butter
1 3/4 cups sugar

Add and mix:
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla

In a second bowl, mix:
2 1/4 cups flour
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
2 tsp cinnamon
1 1/4 tsp ginger
1 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp alspice
1/3 tsp cloves

Add the dry mixture to the wet with 1 1/3 cups milk. Alternate dry and milk, starting with dry, ending with dry.

Pour into a well greased and floured Bundt pan. Cook at 350F for 35-40 minutes. Make sure the centre of the cake is cooked before removing from the oven.

Icing

2 tbsp hot water
1/2 tsp instant coffee

OR

2 tbsp espresso

1 1/2 tbsp melted butter
Icing sugar — enough to make it creamy, but not dry

Drizzle icing over cake while still hot.

Untitled and Uncreative

I have been taking pictures, although I haven’t taken any off the card in a while.  I have also been spending a lot of time writing and drawing in a couple of journals. I have a small one that is in my purse for those times I need to write while I am out and I have a blank unlined journal for doodling and working things out. What I haven’t been doing is writing here. I am not sure why.  I spend almost every night trying to catch up on twitter and blogs and I just don’t feel like trying to put my words down through the keyboard at the moment.

I am feeling a little stifled by the computer even, like I might need to take some time offline. Of Course that isn’t really an option now as I am doing some social media consulting right at the moment and it isn’t conducive to being offline. It may just be the almost full week of having Aidan home with pink eye.  It maybe that by the time I am finished doing the social media consulting work that I am loath to even look at my computer. It may be that I am feeling a little self conscious at the moment. I am not sure why. I think it may be the January blahs with a teeny it of seasonal depression thrown in.

It has been so dreary weather wise that the day that has some sunshine in it merely sets off the raging sinus headache from the abrupt weather change.

I am feeling a need to make a bit of a change even if it is only the colour of my hair, or the colour of my glasses. I just can’t seem to get off my ass and do it. Here is me getting off my ass tomorrow and making an appointment at Twizzle. On Monday I will call to get a copy of my glasses prescription (since I lost it somewhere.) This week I am purging my closet and figuring out how I am getting a new dresser in my room. It will happen, if only for my sanity.
