Live Blogging the Opera: Getting Ready and Getting There

Part the first: Getting to the Opera.

It is now 3 o’clock and I need to do my hair and get dressed. I am planning on taking transit, so I have a couple of options, the 17 or walking to the Canada Line and getting off at City Centre and walking. Looking at the Translink site I think I am better off getting the 17 downtown and walking the two blocks to the theatre.

IĀ  have my transportation planned and now I need to figure out which bag I am going to bring my camera with the 18-125 lens and the battery grip, my netbook, my wallet, keys and iPhone. Since carrying two bags is awkward I have reconfigured my Krumpler bag to fit everything.

Now to getting my hair done and dressed.

Me ready for the opera.

Hair done, and I am dressed. I am not sure, but that maybe because I was really hoping to have a new dress for tonight. I will get Anthony to take a picture when he and Aidan finish with their Portal 2 level.

Just back from the backstage tour. The set is fabulous and I would love to come another time and really see the set changes in action from the stage.

Chandelier

The first two acts were fabulous except for one small thing . . . someone in the row in front of us got sick all over a chair. Tracey and I were wondering what was going on, why were all the people leaving before anyone had sung a note? Yup, then the smell wafted. Luckily it wasn’t too bad where we were and they tried to clean it up as best they could, but it did make a difference to the performance for us.

Erin Wall, who sang the part of Violetta is wonderful. I am really pleased with her performance so far.

Vancouver Opera: La Traviata

Tonight I am going to the opera and I get to be one of the bloggers on display. I am looking forward to the spectacle of the dresses, drama and of course the singing. I love opera and if I had the guts and voice for it, it might be something I would have done as a career. In my years as a Dalhousie music student, I am sure my vocal teacher would have laughed at that statement, but it is true. I came to love opera and I am so in awe of those that have the vocal and acting talent to pull it off well.

Tonight the Vancouver Opera company is putting on Giuseppe Verdi’sĀ  “La Traviata” with Erin Wall as Violetta and David Pomeroy as Alfredo.

Violetta is a consumptive courtesan who takes up with Alfredo. As with most opera things do not go well for the couple as Alfredo’s father doesn’t apporove and convinces Violetta that Alfredo’s sister will never get amrried if she and Alfredo are still together. Alfredo, not knowing what his father has done, meets up with Violetta with another man at a party and things do not go well. It is not until Alfredo’s father realizes how sick Violetta really is that he relents and tells Alfreo what he has done and consents for the two to marry. In the end Violetta and Alfredo don’t marry, but she gives him a small portrait of herself and prays that he and the woman he does marry are happy. She then dies.

  • Once we ignored Quinlan (& made sure that the door to the outside had the tall safety lock on) he did eventually get back in bed & to sleep. #
  • When we just checked on the boys it looks as if Quinlan made it up on to his brother's bunk bed to read at least once. Aidan didn't wake up. #

Cassandra Clare and Holly Black

Waiting for Cassandra and Holly

Waiting for Cassandra and Holly

On Monday night I went out to Chapters in Metrotown to hear Cassandra Clare and Holly Black read from their new books and answer some questions. I was hoping to get a chance to talk to them and get some of my books signed but there were a few things conspiring against me. The first was being a mom unwilling to hire a babysitter so that I could go and block out a spot at noon. The second was that as I was running late I didn’t bring all my books. I could have had all my Spiderwick Chronicles and Modern Faerie Tales, and my Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices books signed, but as I was more interested in being able to see the presentation I would have been at the store until at least midnight. I Heard that Cassie and Holly stayed signing and chatting with their fans until half past midnight.

Cassie Welcoming the Crowd

I recorded most of the reading and question period and I must say that I was so impressed. They were engaged and interactive with the audience and they answered dozens of questions. It is why I am so impressed with Holly and Cassie on twitter. Both authors answer and interact with their fans, but @cassieclare spends a lot of time tweeting with her fans. She has interesting discussions and answers questions and generally is a very good example of how authors can be a huge part of their own pr. In fact I knew about the reading event because Holly and Cassie tweeted about it and all of their book signings.

I am also impressed at how comfortable they seemed with the audience, with themselves, and their fashion. Both Cassie Clare and Holly Black are bigger women like me and they were rocking clothes that suited them and their shoes were fabulous. I wish I knew where they shopped because I would totally wear what Holly is for the opera on the 30th.

I loved seeing so many teens getting so exited about meet these authors. It was as if some of them were meeting their rock star heroes and it was wonderful to see. The line ups around the store were huge but the staff was friendly and the parents seemed to be pretty jolly about having their kids get so excited about meeting their favourite authors. I know that I am excited to be taking Aidan to meet on of his favourite authors soon.Ā  I hope we don’t make it to midnight, but if it happens I will be happy to help make a memory that he will never forget.

Holly Black and Cassandra Clare Singing Books and Meeting Fans

I have not read the latest in the Mortal Instruments, or the second curse workers series, but I am receiving review copies any day now, Yay! I am also going to be sending them interview questions through the publisher, and I am inviting you to send me any questions you may have as well.

When I got to the reading I was a little weirded out that I was one of the only older people there who didn’t have a son or daughter wanting to meet the authors. What I soon realized is that I enjoyed myself. Sometimes we just need to admit that doing something for ourselves is a good thing. I think next time I will try to get blogger/media status though, I think it would have been good for both Chapters and me.

If you have not read Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments or Infernal Devices, I highly recommend them. I also recently read Holly Black’s Modern Faerie Tale series and I devoured it in one weekend. So go and read!
