Day 4: Shall I Try Some Truth? Body Image Edition

I decided that on the days that I am having a hard time getting the creative juices flowing I will use the 30 Days of Truth meme.  I am not sure where it first surface but all the cool kids are playing along.  Each day you are supposed to take a prompt and write a post about said prompt.

Day 01: Something you hate about yourself.

***

Something I hate, well dislike, about myself is my body image.  I really wish I felt better about how I look and what type of body I have.  I try really hard to be positive about how I look, but some times is is a very hard prospect.

I am a curvy sort of woman.  I have a big bosom and this has always made me feel like I am bigger than I actually am.  Inside I am a slim woman with a  B cup, perky breasts, flat stomach, nice hair, zit free face and a dazzling smile.  I sometimes am surprised at how large a person I really am.  I am not built to be a fashionable woman, at least not in Vancouver.

I don’t like that I feel this way about my body.  I can walk forever, I am not too bad on a bike and I can run after my very fast two year old.  I am pretty sure that my husband think I am pretty, and I have never heard him complain about the size of my breasts.  I know that my boys love me and that it doesn’t occur to them that I am a fat girl.

I hate that sometimes I feel ugly.  I hope that my boys don’t know that I feel that way.  I don’t want them to ever feel like they are skinny enough, or whatever enough.  I want them to stay oblivious to what society thinks is beautiful.  I want them to feel comfortable with their bodies.  I want them to be confident.  I want me to be confident and comfortable.  Maybe I need to have a boudoir session like one of my favourite bloggers.

I want to learn to love my body no matter what it looks like.

Bopomo Pictures

Finally we have a family portrait that we don’t hate.  Let me be clear, Quinlan and Aidan are the epitome of cute and photogenic, Anthony and I  . . . are not.  That is not to say that we can’t get good pictures of Anthony and I, it is just that when trying to get a picture of the 4 of us, we are the ones with the worried, forced smiles on our faces as the boys move here, there and everywhere.  Luckily Bopomo Pictures is set up for that.

The Left Coast Floyds

When Bopomo Pictures invited me to come out to Morgan Crossing in Surrey to have some family pictures taken, I jumped at the chance.  I had previously been to a shoot at the kits location for ChillMonkeys apparel and I was very impressed with the photographers, baby distractors and overall setup.  Having been to the kits location I was eager to see what they were doing in Surrey.  I was offered a free session (sitting fees are just $30,) 2 free pages of prints and 2 free digital images.

The mid afternoon slot was good as we had a number of other things to do that day but it did mean that since Quinlan’s nap was truncated and the kids had also been to a birthday party that things could have gone south very quickly.  Luckily Bopomo is prepared for this and always shoots in pairs, a photographer and a baby botherer clown smile maker puppeteer someone to get the kids attention where the photographer wants it.  The space is child proof and the photographers know how to get incredible pictures out of your child.

Quinlan

The process was pretty painless, a half hour shoot, about 15-20 minutes for the photographer to go through the shots and put them on the computer for you to see, then the choosing time.  Anthony and I had been over this process recently so we were pretty decisive.  We ended up choosing 5 pictures, 1 of the 4 of us and 2 each of the boys, and we also got 3 of them as digital images.

I am glad that we had this experience at  Bopomo.  I was beginning to think that we weren’t ever going to get a good picture of all of us together.

Talking to 5 year olds About Death

The day before my mother-in- law died this summer I started writing a post about how we were dealing with the reality of a grandparent dying and Aidan’s reactions and questions.  Since she died the next morning I didn’t get a chance to finish my thoughts, we just had to deal.  I thought I would post what I had written and then, well I don’t know, maybe I will try to finish my thoughts.

It is no secret that my mother-in-law is dying.  She in in end stage palliative care and is very near the end.  She can’t speak very much and when she does it is very hard to hear her.  The drugs she is on make her very out of it and I am not sure how much she is comprehending right now.  As a result there is no hiding from our very curious 5 year old that his grandmother is dying.

Aidan has all kinds of questions and we do our best to answer them as honestly as we can without hurting him. He knows that she is very sick and at this point he knows that she is going to be dead soon.  He has seen her twice in the hospital, both boys have, and they get the best smiles from her that I have seen since we got here.  Unfortunately, or fortunately, I am not sure which, the questions come more often when we are in the hospital room.  I thought I answered most of the ones that would come up, but one I just didn’t think about was one I really hope his grandmother didn’t hear.  Not because I think it was a bad question, and not because it was something I really couldn’t answer, though I couldn’t, but because I think it might hurt her feelings. How do you answer “How does it feel to be in the cemetery?”

I know that my boy is trying to process everything.  I personally believe in heaven even though I have no real idea of what heaven might actually be like.  For a while Aidan thought that heaven was in the Himalayas.  I am totally ok with that idea.  Tonight he wanted to know where heaven was. I told him that I think god can make heaven where ever we like it best, and I asked him where he thought heaven should be for him.  So far our house is winning as the place he likes best in the world.

I am not sure we will bring the boys back to the hospital. I wasn’t sure we were going to bring them to the hospital the 2nd time, but we asked Aidan if he wanted to go to see his grandmother again. The way her eyes lit up when she saw them and they sent her hugs and kisses makes me want to bring them for her sake, but I am just not sure if it is a good idea.

In the end we decided to have my mother come to the house early and have just Anthony and I go to the hospital.  I am glad that is the decision we made because Kathy died a little after we got to the hospital.  I know that it was a good thing for us to be there so that we could be there for John.

In the days that followed Aidan had even more questions, some easy to answer, some harder.  We even had some misunderstandings that frankly gave us a bit of a laugh, which in a time of grief you need. We didn’t bring Aidan to the funeral home for the visitation because it really wasn’t set up for two very energetic little boys.  The only down side to this was during the funeral itself when Aidan really wanted to open up the casket.

After the burial Aidan said goodbye to Grandma as we left the cemetery.  Quinlan didn’t say goodbye until we were quite far away from the cemetery and Aidan told him that we were too far to say goodbye to Grandma.  When I told him that I believe that Grandma’s spirit can  hear them from wherever they are, he was confused.  I then said that  it was just grandma’s body that was in the cemetery not her soul.  To this he replied “Only the body? Where are Grandma’s head and legs?” Yes, children this age still have some very concrete ideas and the abstract ones are difficult to understand.  I think that in some ways kids are just more honest about their confusion than the adults around them.

In the end I think that the honesty with which we dealt with Kathy’s death was a lot easier than trying to figure out elaborate untruths, or even avoidance.  Aidan still lets us know that while he knows that Grandma is dead and he won’t see her, he wishes she could be undead.  He remembers her and loves her and that will always be something he has.  We just need to remember that sometimes out of the blue we will get more questions about why people die.  The answer “I don’t know” is an ok answer to have.  When he asks “are we going to die?” answering that I hope not anytime soon, but someday yes, is appropriate, honest and I hope reassuring.  Now I just need a satisfactory way to answer his questions about war.

Getting Ready For Christmas

I know, I have just been posting about Halloween and already I am starting in on Christmas.  I am determined to get a head start this year on Christmas and that will begin with two things: getting my holiday cards made and sent out and getting the calendars made for the family.

I always think around the middle of December that I really should have made some personalized Christmas cards especially when I get a few in the mail.  This year I will be on the ball with some from Shutterfly. They have a ton of different cards and I am having a hard time choosing just one.

I have narrowed it down to 2 designs.

This one has the colours I like and it is a folded car so there is room for a personal note. I also like the collage feel of the photographs.

This one I like also because it is a folded card, but I think I may like the design better.  I am not sure which photgraphs I will choose and I am sure that will be the deciding factor between the two.

Which one do you think we should choose? Which one do you want to come to your house this year?

I answered Shutterfly’s blogger promotion and you can too: Bloggers get 50 free cards from Shutterfly, find out how à http://bit.ly/sfly2010
