It is no secret that Anthony and I are engaged and active in the political scene in Canada. We vote, we research the issues and we talk about what our politicians are doing for and about our country, city and province. We talk about politics in front of and with our children. While our two year old hasn’t grasped what it means to vote in an election our 6 year old has and he wants to vote.

He talk to us today about Harper and said that he didn’t want Steven Harper to be Prime Minister anymore. We asked him why and his answer was that Harper was mean and was doing bad stuff. He then said that maybe he [Harper] was just going to stop all the bad stuff at the rallies. I told him that Harper wants him to be working on his campaigns.

In the car today on the way to a birthday party Aidan asked me to vote for a certain party. I told him that I might just do that and then he told me he was going to vote for this party too. I had to tell him that he wasn’t allowed to vote yet. He asked me why? I told him that our voting rules want people to be legally an adult before they can choose our elected leaders. It seems so unfair that I have a little boy who has a fair grasp of politics and a real interest in voting and he can’t, and there are so many Canadians who don’t take the time to figure out what they believe in and can’t get off their asses to vote. Saying that they aren’t interested, or that don’t think that their vote makes any difference.

I really hope that these vote mobs actually happen. I want a change in how engaged our country is in our political system. Figure out what you believe in and get out and vote! You have time before and after work, and even if you can’t go then, your work is obligated to let you go to vote.

Vote! Take your children, like we do with Aidan, and maybe in a few years we will have a youth vote that really makes its mark on the country.

In reading my tweetdeck this morning catching up on the conversations that were happening last night, I came across a very interesting one on tubal ligation. Specifically will an OB/GYN perform a tubal ligation on a woman who has not had kids or is considered “too young?”

My first thought was that if a woman wants a tubal ligation who is anyone to stop her? We don’t get upset if a man wants a vasectomy, do we? No, we think wow that is someone who is taking responsibility for their life and birth-control. Why should we get upset or refuse surgery to a woman who wants the same thing? Why should a woman who doesn’t want kids have to pump their bodies full of hormones or rely on a non-foolproof form of birth-control like condoms?

Looking at the failure rates, tubal ligation results in about 1 pregnancy in 1000 women sterilized, while a condom when properly used result in 2 pregnancies in every 100 women. Hmm, so doing the math, the tubal ligation is a much more effective form of birth-control.

The arguments against tubal ligation seem to stem from the surgeon thinking the woman might change her mind later in life. Well, this doesn’t really ring true. If a woman decides she doesn’t want to have children, if she is at all ambivalent she will choose one of the other forms of birth-control. She will choose the pill, condoms or an IUD. Most people do not opt for surgery UNLESS they are sure. The other argument I have heard is usually thrown at couples. Yes a vasectomy is an easier procedure, but it isn’t for all couples. Hell if you are single and don’t want kids taking care of this for yourself makes good sense. As stated earlier other forms of birth-control are not permanent or 100% effective. While not 100% effective, a tubal ligation is permanent and the .04% failure rate is pretty damn nice.

I am not suggesting that tubal ligation is for every woman or for every couple. If I were a single woman who didn’t want kids and I had really thought it through, I would be pissed if I couldn’t find someone who would perform the surgery for me. If the surgery isn’t covered and I am willing to pay for it, why should others be able to make the decision for me? If people made the decision to sterilize women without their consent we would be outraged. This is the opposite, people are taking away some women’s choices by refusing to perform this surgery. Would they rather perform abortions instead?

I also read this article from the Toronto Sun about a young couple with two kids being denied a tubal ligation after her scheduled c-section because of her age. Who but they should decide how many children they should have?

I love my children and I am so happy that I have them, but not all women feel the need to have children. Not all women are meant to be mothers. I think that is what really rankles about this subject. I wanted to be a mother, but if I didn’t I would want to be respected for my decision. I want to be respected for my decision to have children, because in the end it is MY DECISION.

What do you think? Should doctors be able to refuse to perform tubal ligation unless they deem the woman has had enough children or is old enough? Should it be entirely the decision of the woman who wants the procedure?

I am not really a very political mother, or person for that matter. I vote, yes, and I have opinions about politics, but I have never been one to join a protest and march. I know, I know, I live in BC and I should be a rabid something or other and protest all the time, join rallies and generally make a lot of noise. A lot of the time people who make huge deals about a lot of things annoy me.

There are a few things however that make me crazy. Telling a nursing mother that she needs to cover up because she is being obscene feeding her baby makes me crazy. Groups like Myspace and Facebook taking off pictures of nursing mothers for being obscene while letting a group taking pictures of drunk girls misbehaving, and pictures of people doing whatever it is they do. Have you seen some of the cartoons that people send on Facebook? As a reaction the League of Maternal Justice had a live web nurse-in and a video montage of lots of mother’s breastfeeding pictures, mine included. I thought it was beautiful. I wasn’t ashamed of having my pictures in a video that saw nourishing your child as a good thing. Now Youtube has decided to take down the video. Not making it for older audiences, they have taken it down. It makes me really sad that something so nice has been deemed obscene.

I am so saddened that I need to write about it. I need to tell you my family and friends that something that is so wonderful, that is healthy for mother and baby is being labelled obscene. I am so sorry that I didn’t make sure that I sent people the link while it was still up. I am sorry that I was quiet in my actions to make a point to people who compare breastfeeding to masturbating in public. It is almost enough to make me want to have a rally, a protest. I am going to do a small video to the Youtube people. I am going to link to the League of Maternal Justice. I am going to link to my member of parliament. (Damn it is Hedy fry and she might just make things worse.) I am going to be vocal about this. I might even send an email to CBC and try to get them to do something on this. It is time to stop telling us that something that the World Heath Organization, Health Canada, and god knows what other health organizations tell us if best for baby, is not for anyones eyes. That it must be covered up. It makes me mad.

If it makes you angry or sad as well there are some things you can do. If you go to the League of Maternal Justice they have links to various organizations and ways to help. I hope that someday soon this won’t be an issue at all. Breastfeeding will be seen as natural and beautiful and something you don’t need to cover up.
