As we always do on July 1st, we celebrate Canada Day at granville Island. This year my mom was with us and we headed down after lunch and Quinlan’s nap. The interesting part of it was we were all dressed in almsot the same clothes we wore in February . . . at the Olympics. Yes it was that cold.

We managed to get a few pictures of the boys and Nana. This was harder than was necessary because Aidan is at the point in his career where he feels the need to make weird faces and move.

About a month ago I started to see tweets fling about a super idea for Mother’s day. As far as I know it started out as a glimmer in @KimPlumley’s mind, and today Twitter Giver launched its first contest. Along with Yoyomama and now CBC Vancouver, Twitter Giver has a huge prize worth over 3000 dollars for the winning tweet.

So how do you enter? It is as easy as writing 140 characters. Write about your mom, or help your kids write about theirs and tweet it with the tag #cbcgiver. You have until 11:59 pst tonight and the winning tweet will be revealed tomorrow on the Early Edition on CBC radio 1. If your mother won’t see your tweet, send her a copy, because prizes aside, how you feel may be the best present she receives.

Show your love for your mother. Here is mine:

I took a break from the menu planning last week and it was a disaster. I had to actually plan the meals for the latter part of the week. So back to planning from the beginning. (I am actually using a number of the meals my mom suggested in the last post.)

Monday: Baked Breaded chicken, oven fries (I have been meaning to try baking sweet potato fries, or maybe beet fries), yellow wax beans

Tuesday: Guide Night, soup or frozen dinner

Wednesday: Spaghetti & meat sauce & garlic bread & salad

Thursday: Pizza (my mom usually uses a pita and sauce and veggies for her quick pizza) add some salad or raw veggies and dip and you have a great meal.

Friday: BBQ Steak, baked potatoes, salad, corn
Saturday: Get Anthony to make Sweet and Sour Meatballs (he does a much better job than I do.)

Sunday: Open

Some other suggestions my mom had:
Baked talipia fish with oven fries
Slow cooker baked beans & porridge bread
Lamb medallions with mashed potatoes and peas
Bbq spare ribs and rice

As always you can click on the banner to get to more menu plans at Organizing Junkie. Have a great week.

Anthony and I got to sleep sometime after midnight only to be wakened by a horrific scream in the alley out back. The screaming kept on going followed by a man yelling and the woman still screaming bloody murder. (Well no those weren’t her exact words, but it really sounded bad.) There was also a dog (obviously big) barking loudly. The. Whole. Time.

Anthony decided to grab some pyjama pants and run outside to see what was happening. He didn’t take a phone, nor shoes, nor shirt, but went outside and yelled at the couple to see if everything was alright. Mom was up on the balcony and asking if she should call the police, and a bunch of people from the front of our complex came out back to see what was going on. I grabbed some clothes and went upstairs to get the phone that was working so I could call 911 if needed.

The view from the balcony was kind of strange. A number of people were outside in various states of dress, what turned out to be a police officer with a police dog, a couple of plain clothes police officers and unmarked cars, and a woman who was tracked to a garage alcove in the complex behind us after allegedly stealing something. The police officer with the dog was yelling at the bystanders to calm down “She did a thief,” or something to that ungrammatically correct effect. So we had in our alley a “police incident.” It was very loud and frightening (the woman sounded like she was being assaulted,) and a big burst of adrenalin for the second time that night.

I tell you waking up to a woman screaming like that is very very disturbing. I can only thank god that Aidan slept through the whole thing.

Getting back to sleep was difficult. Not only did we have the after effects of the adrenalin push, but it stayed noisy and confusing in the alley for quite a while. About ten minutes after Anthony got back inside (fully admitting that he really should have put on some shoes and brought a phone) it got quite loud outside again. The woman yelling “You have already told me my fucking rights. I don’t want to hear them again.” The police officer(s) obviously telling her again. The paramedics doing something or other but not using the siren. Again I say thank god Aidan didn’t wake up.

I suppose there are several pieces of good news in this scenario.

Anthony wasn’t hurt and now realizes that if you go out to help a screaming woman (he did stay far away and ask if she needed help) you first put on shoes and bring a phone.

Aidan didn’t wake up.

Anthony finished listening to his audiobook since he didn’t get back to sleep till after 3 am.

I realized once and for all that I do not want to be a police officer. (Not that I was actually thinking of changing careers.)

It gives my mom a good story to tell when she gets back home.

I got to use the word “allegedly” in a grammatically correct manner, I think. and

It makes one hell of a blog post.

Did we mention that Nana Lorraine was in town for a quick visit (and a Girl Guide conference)? That’s this week’s excuse for a lack of postings (which I’m in the middle of rectifying). Mom was really happy to get time out here and enjoyed the conference and even managed to get me back into guiding. I am not sure if I will stay after this year but up until the trip to Quebec with eleven 14-16 year old girls I really enjoyed it.

This weekend past was Labour Day weekend. The weather was gorgeous, so we took advantage of it. Need to get outside before the rainy season starts!

On Sunday we took Aidan to the water park (Yes, I’m aware of the irony of going to the water park during the sunny, dry season before the rain comes). He sure likes holding the hose. And, he sure doesn’t like sharing it. (Last night we were passing a real fire hydrant and he was steering us towards it.)

In fact, he gets right pissed when someone else wants to use the hose! You should have heard the growling!

On Monday we picked Mom up from the Guide camp in the far reaches of Maple Ridge and brought along a picnic basket (thanks CMT!) to have lunch at Alouette Lake in Golden Ears Provincial Park. After lunch, we went for a bit of a hike, with predictable results.

Sooooooo……

File this in the “Doh! Should have thought about that!” folder.

You know how those disposable diapers get pretty bulky as whatever chemical inside of them swells as it absorbs moisture? Guess what happens when a toddler (who will not be named) sits his butt down in a pool of water with a fresh diaper?

It explodes!

Well, pretty much. It swells so quickly that water-absorbed crystals erupt from the lining of the diaper. Man, the stuff was everywhere. Hopefully we got it all cleaned up … I can’t imagine that it’s particularly healthy to eat.

Here’s some pictures of the boy recreating the incident, but with a swim diaper on.

No, I don’t know why he was trying to lie in the water.

He’s not drinking the water — he’s blowing bubbles. No, really.
