With the change in light up here (you would think we were way way up north) it doesn’t get dark before 9:30 and we can’t seem to keep the light from Aidan’s room. This means that for the last few nights Aidan has not been getting to sleep before it is dark. This is wreaking havoc on our lovely bedtime schedule and is making it very hard for our Aidan to get the amount of sleep that he needs. (He is also waking up at the crack of Dawn!) So today despite the very tired toddler and Mommy we went down to the baby gym at False Creek to get some time in on the cars and ride on toys. Aidan for some reason will not go near the bouncy castle. In fact it was the same shaking fear that he had when we tried to bring him up the stairs to the cement trucks. He was very well behaved except for the time when we had to go. The transition times are getting harder and harder for Aidan and I am not sure how to make the transitions from playing to going home any better. He doesn’t seem to understand “one more time around the gym and then we go.”

There is a child’s haircutting place at the Market and Aidan’s friend T. has been twice and his mom Gen has liked the results. Since the last hair cut Aidan got with his dad was a total disaster and the haircut we tried to give him didn’t go much better I hoped that this one would go better. It did. There was a little bit of crying but he was able to sit in a horse chair and watch Thomas the Tank Engine. The stylist was very quick and very used to heads that move all over the place. She also only used scissors as I told her that clippers were a very bad thing and he would have a big tantrum. So, without further adieu, here are the before and after pictures.

After Aidan’s supper last night Anthony decided we need to cut the rest of Aidan’s hair and that we would try the electric clippers we bought. I don’t have any pictures or video because as soon as the clippers were put on his head he started crying and screaming and shaking with fear. Before that he wasn’t afraid of scissors or combs. Now Aidan will run in the other direction and move his head out of the way. We prevailed and took 5 minutes to get his hair cut at least a little bit to make the bangs look a little less severe. Afterwards Aidan was a weeping, shaking clinging mess. He recovered in a bath and went to bed on time, but this has reiterated that going to the barber is not an option for a while. Besides with the Romulan haircut he has there should be no need for a very long time.

Is this a normal reaction?

Anthony has been saying for weeks now that we need to get Aidan’s hair cut. Anthony also bought a home barber kit a couple of weeks ago. We decided that since the last time at the barber went so badly (think some vague horror movie with lots of screaming and crying and clinging,) we would try to get it done at home. I have done a bit of reading and most books will tell you to do it while the toddler is in the high chair and be prepared to do it over a few days. Anthony asked if I had taken some pictures tho celebrate my mad skills at barbering. I replied that I am not sure “skills” or “celebrate” are the right words. So here are some before and after shots of part 1 of I don’t know how many. (Sorry that the before is not actually a “just before” picture.)

Aidan reaching for the camera. Ubiquitous shot for hime right now.

My favourite picture ever. He is so cute even with the bad haircut.

This weekend I was working in the kitchen at our church’s annual Christmas Bazaar so Anthony had Aidan for most of Saturday. Aidan continued his no napping streak and I got a call about 2:20 pm letting me know that the boys would be coming to walk me home at 3. On the walk home we decided that we would try to go and get Anthony and Aidan’s hair cut if the barber was still open.Well, the barber was still open and we thought it would be a good idea to get Aidan’s haircut first. He really needed it and his bangs were very long. Wow. I am not sure quite how to express how upset he got. Howling and shaking. We had him on Anthony’s lap and we got hair everywhere. I was holding his head and J. was working as fast as he could. I felt very sorry for him, but I know that he is a good barber and has kids himself so I wasn’t worried. I had heard that some kids hate having their hair cut, but I didn’t think it would be a problem with Aidan. After the haircut trauma he cuddled into me and almost fell asleep on my shoulder.

We decided to push things and went to the Stupid store for groceries and Anthony asked about the Wii. For those of you that don’t know the Wii is the newest Nintendo game system. We have been drooling over it and waiting for it to come out for months. As a result we have also been doing the should we or shouldn’t we dance. If any place had been taking pre-orders I am sure we would have made up our minds sooner and had one for today. Instead we got up early this morning got the boy out of bed and went down to Best Buy at 8:00 am this morning where they were sold out. Anthony had decided to take one of my lines and decided that we were going to work with our Wii karma. If we got to a few stores around us (Best Buy, London Drugs and Toysrus) and they had any left we would get one. If we got to those stores and they were sold out we wouldn’t. Well I guess our Wii karma was bad and none of the places we went had any left. However, Anthony thinks that he was able to order it online at Sears. We are not really sure because we don’t have confirmation yet but we are expecting an email letting us know when we can expect delivery. This won’t take the place of the xbox but I think that it will be a better game machine for the kind of games Aidan will play soon. Besides it is cool looking and hand motions will actually be a part of the controller. I can’t wait to try it. So I guess some Nintendo games will be on our Christmas gift lists. Well they will as soon as we get confirmation that the Wii is coming.

So Wii and a haircut were the bulk of our weekend though Kindermusik and the Grey Cup also are taking up a significant portion. Hmm, who said weekends were for relaxing? Whatever is left of yours, take some time to chill out.

Today Aidan got his first real haircut. Not just a trim. Not a hair here and there. A full blown haircut. I really liked his baby curls, soft hair, in his face, feathering around his ears. It made him look both angelic and mischevious at the same time.

The only problem with hair like this is the toddlers penchant for doing things himself. This means that when they are eating, everything, and I mean everything gets in their hair. This isn’t the worst however, the worst is when your toddler has a cold.

Last week Aidan had a head cold. You know, one of those messy ones with lots of snot. Now, I know that some people take the time to style their hair with gel. Snot is not a good alternative. In fact it is damn hard to get out of hair. So hard in fact that you would think that I could actually sculpt a mohawk in Aidan’s hair.

Now my baby boy has a really boyish haircut. No curls, no hair in his eyes. He looks so grown up. Sigh. 16 months and he looks like a small adult. Well, maybe not. I think I wouldn’t feel so sad if it hadn’t been my plan to get it cut. I knew that my husband needed his hair cut and I had to wash so much stuff out of Aidan’s hair this last week or two that I knew in my head that he needed his hair cut too.

Now my husband has written for our family blog about the experience more eloquently than I can. So check out the post. I will just leave you with some pictures of my new boy.
