Adorable Grin

I feel guilty in admitting this, but I am sick and tired of baby puke. I know, it is called spit-up to make it more palatable, but baby puke it is. There is not a day that goes by that I am not regurgitated on (several or dozens of times) by my now almost seven month old, and it is getting old. I keep hoping he will grow out of it and start to keep his food down.

I sometimes worry about his digestive track, and I have forcefully kept myself from google because of this. He hardly ever has what I consider to be a normal bowel movement, it is always very wet, yellow and hardly ever has “curds” in it. If he wasn’t growing like a weed and in the 50th percentile for weight and 80-90th for height I would be really worried. I hesitate to talk to my doctor about it, because I don’t want to seem like one of those moms who worry all the time about their children’s pooping habits, but I am one of those moms. Is this really a bad thing? Should I worry more about my child’s pooping issues? Does this mean that since he is an almost exclusively breastfed child that I am eating the wrong way? Should I have started solids sooner?

It has only been the last week that I have made a concerted effort to really try to get Quinlan to eat solids. He didn’t even want to try the rice cereal and it is only this week with sweet potato and now carrots that he has shown any interest in solids at all. Sweet potato got the thumbs up as well as a few raspberries. He would show his appreciation (or so I thought) by eating some and then blowing raspberries and getting sweet potato everywhere. Then I tried carrots last night and low and behold, just eating, no raspberries. I haven’t yet tried this morning but I am hoping it will go as well.

I was also told that if we started him on solids he might stop wanting to get up in the middle of the night to eat, that it was habit. I am now not so sure. For quite a while Quinlan was sleeping from about 10 pm until 5ish. Now he goes to sleep at about 7:30 pm (I feed him to sleep) and starts crying for a snack about 2:30 am. He then wakes up again betweek 4 and 5 am for another feed. It is making me a little cranky. I can’t blame him or ignore him, so I am getting really tired. If I wasn’t a morning person before it is really unlikely I will start to become one now.

So the bottom line is I need some advice on stopping the puking, and helping his bowel solidify some of the poop. Or maybe I just needed to vent a little and then some reasurance that despite my fears, since Quinlan is a happy and well adjusted baby, he probably isn’t suffering with his pooping and puking problems.

I am starting the toilet training in earnest. Every half hour, until we go out to return the Tigger costume, we will be on the toilet. (Well, Aidan will be.) I have started with the first lesson today.

How to sit on the toilet.

Rule for Aidan:

1: Always make sure the penis is pointing down into the toilet.

2: Always hold on to the handles.

3: Keep the feet on the blue stool. (Makes it much easier to stay in the right position.)

Rules for mommy:

1: Make sure you praise the sitting on the toilet.

2: Make sure you say what a big boy Aidan is. Make those big boy diapers the thing he wants to wear.

3: Praise, praise, praise.

Dilemmas for Mommy: How do you get the reluctant boy to bend over so you can get him wiped? What are good toilet training bribes? How often do you give them? Do you only give treats for product? Or do you start off giving a sticker on a chart for every time they sit on the toilet? How many stickers equals a treat? Where can I find Thomas the Tank Engine underwear?

Help!

Did we mention that Nana Lorraine was in town for a quick visit (and a Girl Guide conference)? That’s this week’s excuse for a lack of postings (which I’m in the middle of rectifying). Mom was really happy to get time out here and enjoyed the conference and even managed to get me back into guiding. I am not sure if I will stay after this year but up until the trip to Quebec with eleven 14-16 year old girls I really enjoyed it.

This weekend past was Labour Day weekend. The weather was gorgeous, so we took advantage of it. Need to get outside before the rainy season starts!

On Sunday we took Aidan to the water park (Yes, I’m aware of the irony of going to the water park during the sunny, dry season before the rain comes). He sure likes holding the hose. And, he sure doesn’t like sharing it. (Last night we were passing a real fire hydrant and he was steering us towards it.)

On Monday we picked Mom up from the Guide camp in the far reaches of Maple Ridge and brought along a picnic basket (thanks CMT!) to have lunch at Alouette Lake in Golden Ears Provincial Park. After lunch, we went for a bit of a hike, with predictable results.

Sooooooo……

File this in the “Doh! Should have thought about that!” folder.

You know how those disposable diapers get pretty bulky as whatever chemical inside of them swells as it absorbs moisture? Guess what happens when a toddler (who will not be named) sits his butt down in a pool of water with a fresh diaper?

It explodes!

Well, pretty much. It swells so quickly that water-absorbed crystals erupt from the lining of the diaper. Man, the stuff was everywhere. Hopefully we got it all cleaned up … I can’t imagine that it’s particularly healthy to eat.

Here’s some pictures of the boy recreating the incident, but with a swim diaper on.

No, I don’t know why he was trying to lie in the water.

He’s not drinking the water — he’s blowing bubbles. No, really.
