Update: Congratulations to Heather!

*******

We here at the Floyd household are big fans of Fred Penner and the Cat Came Back. The marriage of the two is one of our favourite songs. I was happy to have Fred singing as we had kids. His songs are fun and not too preachy and the melodies and harmonies are interesting. He is a children’s entertainer that takes the adults into consideration. This is why we were thrilled to find out that Fred Penner has written a musical play based on his enduring “The Cat Came Back.”

The Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company welcomes the story of Winnipeg’s most famous Cat to the Playhouse stage, in its first theatrical incarnation – The Cat Came Back, co-created by the formidable trio of Fred Penner, Jay Brazeau, and Kim Selody.

In this brand new, fanciful tale, inspired by the song Fred made famous, we meet a merry band of musicians who must deal with their grumpy neighbor Mr. Johnson and his mysterious cat. Together, they learn about the joys and challenges of friendship, and how we can take care of each other. Outstanding feline puppetry and masterful music make this a show you and your family won’t want to miss! As Jay Brazeau so eloquently puts it, “The Cat Came Back is like Kraft Dinner: I grew up with it; it makes me feel good inside, and every time I have it I feel like I am home again.”

From Vancouver Playhouse

Tickets, from $10, can be reserved online at vancouverplayhouse.com, by calling the Playhouse Box Office at 604 873 3311, or in person at the theatre box office Monday – Friday, 9:30am-5pm.

*********

As many of you know we are big theatre buffs in this family. Even though Anthony and I have been mainly to children’s theatre in the last few years we are thrilled to pass on our love of live theatre to our children. Knowing that this play was commisioned for Manitoba Theatre For Young People makes me even more happy to be able to offer two tickets to one of my readers for the March 31st, opening night performance at the Vancouver Playhouse. Leave a comment on this post letting me know what your favourite Fred Penner song is and you will be entered. Comments will be accepted until 26 February. The winner will be notified by email and will have 48 hours to send me their mailing information before I choose another winner. Good Luck!

I am not sure if you know this but Aidan and Quinlan will try almost anything as long as it is presented to them on a chopstick. This year they were not only excited about having a great meal, but also about making a great New Year’s celebration. That it is the year of the dragon just makes this new year even more special to them.

Aidan decided that this year we need to kick up our celebrations a bit. A chance to make decorations and party are always a good idea to our boys. I think, why not? We should celebrate as much as we can in this life. So the 23rd January was the beginning of the lunar new year and we went skating with Aidan’s beaver troop. We didn’t have time for our New Year’s feast so we put it off for a little later in the week. We made lanterns and dragons and ordered our wonton soup, spring rolls, noodles, and ginger beef.

Here in Vancouver we have a meeting of Chinese New Year and Robbie Burns day with something we like to call Gung Hagis Fat Choy. I like that it is a big multicultural soup. I want Aidan and Quinlan to be part of that big multicultural soup. I want them not only to be willing to try new foods, but speak new languages and learn about different cultures.

*******

I am a big fan of anything that makes dinner time easier, especially if it gets my boys to try something different. I am not adverse to having a little bit of dip to help my children eat what is healthier. I make oven baked breaded chicken that is much healthier than chicken nuggets and my boys gobble them up with a small bit of VH Sweet and Sour Sauce.

I was given some Garlic Hoisin Sauce and some Garlic Rib Sauce as well as some Sweet and Sour Sauce. I like the flavours and while I wouldn’t use the Hoisin sauce too often because of the sodium content, to make an occasional dinner it is fine. I used the rib sauce on a pot roast and it was fantastic. The vegetables took on the flavour of the garlic sauce and the roast was nice and tender. I am looking forward to making a few of the recipes from the VH site, especially the Orange Sesame Brochettes and the Slow Cooker Sweet and Sour Chicken.

As a part of this blog tour one of my readers will win a VH package of Sauces and Steamers. All you need to do is comment on this post what sauce or steamer you would like to try. Comments must be received by 8 February 2012. I will email the winner for details and the coupons will be mailed to you.

Disclosure – I am participating in the VH Chinese New Year Celebration program by Mom Central Canada on behalf of VH. I received compensation as a thank you for my participation. The opinions on this blog are my own.

They have not only given Aidan an outlet for his imagination and creativity but they foster the child within all of us. Last year was the first year we had season tickets and all the productions were fantastic. Aidan and whichever grownup was privileged enough to go with him were entranced and thoroughly entertained.

This season we have season tickets again, but this time we also have tickets for Quinlan for a few of the performances. I can’t wait for Frog and Toad as this will be the first time that all four of us will get to go to a play together. Aidan and I are going to the opening of The Wizard of Oz on the 3rd of December and we can’t wait, especially after having seen some of the wardrobe and the rehearsals when we have theatre classes.

Now for the exciting part for my local readers, I have 2 sets of 2 tickets for the December 10th performance at 7pm, of The Wizard of Oz. If you have a child 4+ and would like a chance to go all you need to do is comment on this post and let me know who is your favourite character in The Wizard of Oz. You must be able to come to the December 10th performance at Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island. Leave a comment by next Friday the 25th and I will email the winners. The winners will have 48 hours to contact me, if not I will draw another winner.

If you want to hedge your bets you can get your very own tickets by calling 604.685.6217.

Disclosure: The season tickets we purchased ourselves. They are well worth it.

Last year I was given the opportunity to make our Christmas card at Shutterfly and for the cost of shipping I received 50 cards. I worked really hard on the cards and I think they turned out really well. They certainly reflected us and I was impressed by the quality of the cards and how easy they were to make. They still cost about the same as if we bought some store made cards when you took in the shipping costs to Canada but they were so much more personal and beautiful.

This year we still need to take our family picture and I am not sure which card I will use. I am partial to folded cards because I like to have room to make each of the cards personal. While all of them will have the same sentiment inside, I also like to take the time to write a bit of a letter to the people we send the cards to. It is one of the best things about the Christmas season for me. I love that people take the time to actually write to each other. My boys love opening cards from back east and the letters that I write every day for advent.

I have a few cards picked out and I am hoping that you will help me choose a style. I love our card from last year but I am hoping for something a little different.

I like the black and that the card has room for a few different pictures. It works as a card to go to friends and family with different religous views and it should be meaningful to everyone.

I like the simplicity of this card and it also has room for lots of pictures. I have cute kids and a tonne of pictures I can use.

This is also a simple card with room for lots of pictures. I think I like it better than the previous one because of the square picture format. I think this would be great for my instagram pictures.

This card appeals to me for its design. I love the red and the way the banner scrolls over the pictures.

Lastly this card is simple and beautiful. If we can get a good picture of either the boys or all four of us I might choose this card.

******

If you would like a code for 25 free cards, I have 3 to give away. Simply leave me a comment on this post by November 7th and I will choose 3 winners at random. The code can be used for any 25 cards on the Shutterfly site. They do not need to be holiday cards at all.

I recieved a code for 50 free cards again this year, but all the opinions are my own. I was very impressed by the cards we received last year and even more impressed with the photobooks we had made (at our own expense) to commemorate our big roadtrip this year.

******

Are you a blogger? Want a chance at 25 free cards this holiday season? Register here: http://goo.gl/DDw7Q

When we were growing up Anthony and I had a very different lifestyle than our kids do now. Anthony and I were suburban kids with backyards and woods nearby, and Aidan and Quinlan are city kids with parks nearby.

I was a kid who was outside and active a lot of the time. Sure there were times that I preferred to be inside reading a book, but the majority of my childhood was spent outside, playing in the backyard, or swimming, skating, biking, playing in the woods and climbing trees. With the amount of time I spent in trees you would never think that now I have a great fear of heights, but spend time in trees I did. We also were very close to our elementary school, so we played pick up games of softball, and played soccer wherever we could. Anthony was one of those boys who skateboarded, and road his bike recklessly down hills and off homemade ramps. He was also sent out in all weathers to play in the backyard. Our kids have a very different life, but one that is active.

We do not have a backyard, but we live in a very walkable part of the city. Both boys take swimming lessons and have since they were small. We spend a lot of time at the playground. We walk to school as often as we can. Last year Aidan took skating and skiing lessons and he and Quinlan will do so again this year. We walk down to Aidan’s theatre classes every week. Quinlan has started ballet. All of these things are good things, active things and they love to do them. Anthony and I also model active behaviour. Anthony commutes to work by bike. I walk everywhere with the kids. Most weekends we go geocaching.

I think that geocaching as a family has brought about more activity in the last 4 years than anything else. Most weekends we explore a new park and walk or bike around to find new geocaches. It is a chance to get out and about and explore new places. You would be amazed at how many small and big parks are in and around the Lower Mainland. When we go to a new city to visit, we cache to find different places and have other places to walk around.

****

When Healthy Families BC asked me if I would help them with their social media presence and get the word out there about their website I was happy to do it. The website is intended to be a starting place for having a healthier lifestyle, and the blog is full of great tips in exercise and healthy eating including some fantastic recipes.

To help promote their twitter (@healthyfamilybc), facebook and website, Healthy Families BC is giving away a $250 gift card to Lululemon here on Left Coast Mama.

Rules:

You must either follow Healthy Families BC on twitter, @healthyfamilybc, or like them on facebook, then comment here letting me know you did. If you do both, please put them in one comment and I will count it as two entries.

Entries must be received by Monday 19 September 2011. I will contact the winner by email and the winner will have 48 hours to respond. The card will then be mailed to the winner as soon as possible.

Disclosure:

I am not receiving anything to run this contest. I think that promoting a healthy lifestyle is a good thing and I am glad to help.

When Mom Central Canada gave me the opportunity to read and review Alyson Schafer’s “Ain’t Misbehavin’ Tactics for Tantrums, Meltdowns, Bedtime Blues and Other Perfectly Normal Kid Behaviours,” and interview her, I jumped at the chance. I have been reading Alyson’s blog on and off for a while and I like her easy writing style and excerpts of the book on her blog were easy to read, and easy to understand the solutions she suggests.

The book is set up so that you don’t have to read it all, though it is an enlightening read, you can just go to the parts that are relevant to your situation and read about the behaviour in a few minutes. The behaviour is described, then understanding the problem where Alyson sets out why your child might be displaying the miss-behaviour, and then a solution. Some solutions are quick and easy and others will take some time to implement, but they almost all boil down to respect for your child and letting go of some of the control/angst you have about the behaviour.

Looking through the contents of Ain’t Misbehavin’ you might be encouraged more by the fact that the behaviour that is causing you so much angst is also causing other parents angst. Sometimes just knowing that you are not alone makes it easier to release the pressure and make the problem go away. Who hasn’t worried about toilet training, sleep issues, a picky eater or a child who takes forever to get dressed? That a book has advice about something that has been driving us crazy is great.

I think the section of the book that resonated the most for me was the little section (though alluded to throughout the book) titled “Never Do For A Child What a Child Can Do For Himself.“ I am raising my hand meekly right now. I am one of those parents that get frustrated and then do for my sons what I know they are quite capable doing. I need to take a bit of time and back off. That is not to say that there are not consequences, but they are natural and logical consequences.

The letting go and respecting your child’s control over things like getting dressed, or ready for bed, is very hard. Children know how to push your buttons like no one else. Easing the pressure we feel to be perfect parents and letting our children be, we can make things easier. I am trying this with my own sons. I respect that Quinlan is not ready to get rid of the diapers and go to the toilet. I am giving Aidan a morning routine so I am not constantly trying to get him dressed and worrying about being late. It has alread helped with getting ready for bed, I tell him that I will read to him until a certain time and I won’t start until he is ready for bed. The time it takes for him to get ready has reduced dramatically.

****

The contest:

Tell me why you want a copy of Alyson Schafer’s Ain’t Misbehavin‘ in the comments by Friday April 15 6pm PST.

Contest is open to Canada and the US.

I will choose the winner randomly and send the winner an email. You will have 48 hours to send me your address or I will choose another winner.

Mom Central Canada will send a copy to the lucky winner.

****

I am participating in the Ain’t Misbehavin’ program by Mom Central on behalf of Wiley Publishing. I received a copy of the book to review and gift card as a thank you for my participation. The opinions on this blog are my own.

I don’t do a lot of giveaways, but when Holly and Roger of Labour Union Photographers asked if I wanted to do a giveaway for Father’s day for them I jumped at the chance. These are the two photographers that donated their time and space for the top 30 Vancouver Mom Bloggers gala. The lovely head-shot adorning my twitter profile and about page are proof of their fantastic talent.

Who they are:

Labour Union Photographers is comprised of two artists, Roger and Holly, who have come together in business (and in life) through their shared passion for photography. Though they’ve each found expression for our passion in a distinctive style and unique point of view, it is when their photos are experienced together that the magic truly happens. The result is a union of two individual styles that perfectly compliment each other to create a treasury of images that are at once enduring and contemporary, joyful yet intimate. Their mission is to be their clients’ photographers for life, to help them capture the important moments in their lives from their wedding, to pregnancy, to babies, to their 50th wedding anniversary and everything in between.

Based on their success photographing their clients’ weddings in Vancouver with Union Photographers, Roger and Holly launched the Labour Union this spring. Opening the Labour Union, focusing on maternity, baby and family photography, is a natural extension of our wedding photography work.

I am coming up to the year and a half mark of little or no sleep. When I do sleep it is only a few hours at a time and let me tell you I am a woman who needs her sleep. I love sleep. I love the way it feels to wake up after a full 8 to 10 hours of uninterrupted sleep. I love the way it feels to have enough rem sleep. I love being able to remember even a few of my dreams, well at least for a few minutes.

I dream about being able to sleep for more than two hours at a time. I marvel at how amazing even three hours feels. I dream about not having to listen to an audiobook to get back into a sleeping patten. I dream of comfy sheets and pillows and darkened rooms and sleep, beautiful sleep.

I dream about being so well rested that it isn’t difficult to balance my other passions in life, my husband, my kids, writing. I want to have enough energy so that I am fully engaged with my kids. I want to have enough energy so that I can concentrate on more than one thing at a time, and maybe be able to articulate myself again.

I dream of so much sleep that I can discover new passions and rediscover old ones. I want to be energetic and enjoy being outside. I want to be able to take an evening class in jewelry making or photography and feel like I am giving the artistic side of my personality a chance to shine again. I want to be able to sing again. I want to feel like singing again.

I dream of a time when I am once again a woman with passions. I dream of being a better woman than I am now. I dream of sleep.

This post was inspired and written for Mabel’s Labels Blogher ’10 Contest. The premise is this: Electrical storms are going to wipe out the Internet (perhaps forever). You have one day left to write about your passions: what do you want to say to the blogosphere in 300 words or less?

The grand prize is a fully paid trip to the BlogHer conference in NY, including airfare, hotel and conference pass, and a year’s blogging contract for the Mabel’s Labels blog.

Wish me luck and sleep.

I am the first to admit that we have a lot of plastic toys in our house, and some of them require batteries. Most of those that require batteries have not been purchased by us. What I like about most of the toys we have, whether they be plastic or wooden is that they encourage creative, imaginative play. There is so much room for storytelling and role playing with toys like the little people sets, but my favourite toys are the wooden trains and the dress-up clothes.

We got Aidan his first wooden train set with a small table when he was 19 months old. It was just a no-name set with some wooden track, houses, trees, some street signs and of course a few trains. While I knew he would like the trains, and he already liked the train set at our local Chapters, for the first year it was mainly for me to play with him. When he was a little older his father and I made tracks for him but the play was all him. He had different scenarios, and often there were terrific “derailments” and emergency vehicles coming to the rescue.

Now at 4 and a half, Aidan is a track making king. Almost everyday our small living room is taken over by intricate tracks, with bridges, tunnels, switches, curves, stations and whatever else he decides is needed for the day’s mission. I am in awe of how much fine motor skills he is honing with each track he makes. The spatial reasoning he displays is amazing. He is using his hands on approach to figure out how things work, and if it doesn’t he goes on to the next idea. These tracks are ever expanding and ever changing. He will take a track in one direction and when he is finished find a way to make another really complicated piece fit in somewhere else and take it in another direction. With the amount of attention that our 1 year old Quinlan shows the trains he will be a track king even sooner than Aidan was.

We are also big fans of the “Tickle Trunk” here in the Floyd household. We have a few hats like a fire helmet, a police helmet and a wizard’s hat, as well as some home made items like the heart shaped magic wand. My favourite item in amongst the costumes is a beautiful wizard’s cape that my brother’s fiancée made for Aidan for Christmas last year. It is a beautiful deep blue velvet with stars all over it. It is even more special because she made it especially for him. Sometimes this cape turns Aidan into a wizard like the sorcerer’s apprentice, and sometimes he is a superhero. Whatever he needs it to be, it is.

Aidan and some intricate track.

I think letting Aidan play dress up has sharpened his imagination and helped him to think outside the box. He wasn’t concerned about being Spiderman or another specific character for Halloween this year. He was happy to be an elephant like he was last year, except he decided this elephant was going to have fairy wings. I thought it was brilliant and I hope that I continue to help him to be his own person through play. I don’t want to ever squash his creativity, in fact I want him to revel in his uniqueness.

I know that it is hard in this day and age to stop ourselves from giving our children everything they want. It is even harder if the children you have are the only grandchildren on both sides of the family. In some ways I know the only reason we are not totally overrun is because we live so far away from our extended family. Both Anthony and I are trying to make the effort to really make sure that the toys we get for our sons are educational, sturdy and engage them in imaginative play. We don’t want to have our sons’ toys be things that don’t last much longer than a few days out of the box. It is an ongoing battle with ourselves and with our 4 year old. Luckily he takes the word “no” a lot better than a lot of kids I know. I also know that we are not the only ones who have these battles, we are just more adept saying “no” at times because we have no room.

What are your favourite toys for creative and imaginative play?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This post was written as a part of Parenting By Nature’s “Can You Inspire?” contest. They are looking for a blogging ambassador as they call it. A parent who is willing to blog about how they are trying to “parent by nature.” The prizes include a $600 Visa Card and a 6 month blogging contract. In the next week I need to get a lot of feedback here on the blog, on twitter and on Facebook in order to become a finalist. Then if I become a finalist there will be a web poll and the person with the most votes will win. Please help by retweeting and commenting. Thanks!
